INDEPENDENT STUDY EXPECTATIONS

  • In KS2 pupils will be expected to complete 30 minutes in each of the core subjects, English, Maths, Science with another 30 minutes in a practical based subject (2 hours in total)
  • In KS3 pupils will be expected to complete a minimum of 30 minutes weekly, in each of the core subjects with modern foreign languages and three of the foundation  subjects (3 and half hours in   total).
  • The expectation of time spent on independent learning tasks will be greater for pupils in KS3  (years 7 & 8) than in KS2 (years 5 & 6). This is because the older pupils need to prepare for the demands of the High school.
  • Work will rarely be expected to be completed for the next day so pupils have time to plan their independent study and organise their time effectively.

INDEPENDENT LEARNING SUPPORT FACILITIES

  • Opportunities exist for children to complete independent learning tasks in school but outside lesson time for example with access to an I.C.T suite.

  • The library is also open for independent study from 8a.m before school, at breaktime, at lunchtime and after school, closing at 4.30p.m.

The role of the parent is:

  • To promote the philosophy that independent learning is an important and valuable educational and developmental tool.
  • To encourage and support the child (where appropriate discussing and working alongside) and praising him / her when he / she has completed the tasks set.
  • To try to provide an environment which is conducive to good concentration and study or to allow the use of the school facilities when the former is difficult.
  • To take an interest in your child's work and be aware of what your child is studying.
  • To review the Log Book weekly. The Log book can then be used as a means of communication with school by signing weekly and registering, with written comments, any difficulties that your child may be having.

The role of the pupil is:

  • To write work down in their Log Book
  • To ask parents to sign their Log Book weekly
  • To organise time effectively and so complete work as required
  • To seek help if experiencing difficulties with their work.
